Educational
Outreach Programs
Drugs,
gangs, teenage pregnancy, sexism, racism, economic
disadvantage, struggles with body image;
these are only some of the complex problems young
women face in urban environments that can have
major, long-lasting effects on their self-esteem
and ultimately how they develop as women. Periods
of depression and anxiety are parts of every girl's
adolescence, and their unique needs are often unmet
by the educational system and social networks available
to them. This is particularly true in inner-city
communities.
Forbidden
Fruit's educational outreach programs are designed
to meet the growing needs of this underserved
community. Through the performing arts,
Forbidden Fruit gives young women "at-risk" the
opportunity to explore vital and difficult issues
in their daily lives in a safe and creative environment.
This
type of opportunity to express their unique
voices is invaluable because they often come from
a world where positive, interactive
communication is a rare commodity. A significant outcome of
their participation in such a program is that self-image
and self-esteem increases greatly. Ultimately,
our programs aim to stimulate dialogue and
encourage a deeper understanding of issues
as they apply to our lives. Programs include:
Take
A Bite Acting & Writing Workshops:
|
| Participants
meet and have in-depth discussion
about the issues affecting their
own lives and communities. Through
these discussions, it will be determined
what issues are most prevalent
throughout the group. Once the
prevalent themes have been identified,
the group will work together and
explore material based on our discussions.
Selected scenes and monologues
from the material are then performed
by the group and written exercises
are assigned. The written exercises
will be reviewed by the group,
culminating in a discussion of
the work, its importance, and how
we can personally work as catalysts
for change as a result. |
Take
A Bite After School Theatre:
This after-school program gives students a place to be and an activity
to be excited about between the hours of 4 and 6 pm, the time when most
at-risk behavior happens due to lack of supervision and purposeful direction.
Young women participate in an intensive twelve week, acting and playwriting
workshop where they develop their performance skills and write their own
material to be performed in a full-production before their family, friends,
and communities. |
